A Hindi chatbot understands customers who write in Hindi, in Hinglish — Hindi typed in Roman letters, like "delivery kab tak hogi?" — or in English, and replies in the way they wrote. For many Indian businesses this is not a nice-to-have. A large share of customers on WhatsApp and websites write in Hindi or a mix, and an English-only bot either misunderstands them or answers in a language they did not choose.
This guide explains how multilingual chatbots work today, what to test before launch, and when a person should take over. You can try one in the Hindi and multilingual chatbot demo.
Three ways customers actually write
- Devanagari Hindi: "मेरा ऑर्डर कहाँ है?"
- Hinglish in Roman letters: "mera order kahan hai", "refund kitne din mein aayega"
- English, often mixed: "order cancel karna hai, wrong size aaya"
Older chatbots, built on keyword rules, needed separate rules for each script and broke on spelling variations — "kahan", "kahaan" and "kaha" are all the same word. Modern language models handle all three, including mixed sentences, because they understand meaning rather than matching keywords.
One knowledge base, not three bots
The most important design choice: keep one knowledge base. Your return policy, delivery areas, prices and order data live in one place, usually in English. The chatbot finds the right answer from that source and replies in the customer's language.
Separate bots per language drift apart within weeks — one says returns are allowed for 7 days, another for 10. One source means one truth.
What to get right
Reply in the customer's language — and register
A customer who writes in Hinglish usually wants Hinglish back, not formal Devanagari. Someone who writes "aap" expects respect in return. Decide the tone per channel, and test it with real messages.
Numbers, dates and money
"Dedh sau", "do din", "next Monday" and "₹1.5k" all need to become the right number or date. Test order numbers, amounts and dates in both scripts.
Names and places
Customer names, cities and product names appear in either script. Matching "Lucknow" with "लखनऊ", or a product's Hindi name with its catalogue entry, needs testing with your own data.
Voice notes
On WhatsApp, many customers send voice notes rather than typing. Speech-to-text for Hindi and Hinglish is now good enough to understand most of them, as long as the bot confirms anything important ("aapka order #4410, sahi hai?").
Where a person should take over
A good chatbot knows its limits. Hand over to a person when:
- the customer is upset or asks for a person
- the question involves money disputes, refunds above a limit or legal matters
- the bot is not confident it understood
- the topic is sensitive — health, a complaint about staff, anything personal
The handover should carry the conversation so far, so the customer never has to repeat themselves — and the agent can reply in the same language.
How to test before launch
- Collect 200 real messages from your WhatsApp and website chat, in every mix your customers use.
- Write the right answer for each, from your policies.
- Run them through the bot and score: right answer, right language, right tone, right handover.
- Fix the knowledge base, not the bot, when answers are wrong — usually a policy was missing or unclear.
- Launch on one channel first, review a sample of conversations weekly, and widen from there.
What to measure
- Resolved without a person — the share of chats closed by the bot
- Wrong-language replies — should be close to zero
- Handover rate and the reasons for it
- Customer rating after the chat, by language
Regional languages
The same approach extends to Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and other languages. Model quality varies by language, so test each one with real messages before switching it on, and keep a human fallback where quality is lower.
The short version
If a meaningful share of your customers write in Hindi or Hinglish, an English-only chatbot is costing you conversations. A multilingual bot answering from one knowledge base, replying in the customer's own words and handing over at the right moments fixes that without running separate bots.
