01 · The problem
What problem does it solve?
A kurta and dress maker in Jaipur makes 40 styles a season, with cutting in-house and stitching, embroidery and printing at eight job workers. Fabric issue is a register, challans are a carbon book, and the cost sheet is made once, from the sample.
Nobody knows how many pieces of a lot are still with a tailor, which sizes are short for a buyer’s order, or why a style that looked profitable lost money once fabric wastage was counted.
Fabric leakage
More metres used than planned, and nobody sees it.
Lost lots
Pieces sitting at job workers without a trail.
Wrong costing
Prices set from the sample, not from production.
Short shipments
Sizes missing when the buyer’s order is due.
