Why Video Marketing Is Essential for Brands

Why video is now the default language of marketing, the formats that work, how to win the first three seconds, and how to plan, edit and measure video.

Video is now the default language of the internet. Every major platform pushes it, people remember it, and it explains products faster than any amount of text. Brands that are not using video are invisible in the places their customers spend the most time.

Why video works

  • Platforms reward it. Short-form video feeds such as YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels are where much of today's discovery happens.
  • It explains faster. Showing a product in use beats describing it.
  • It builds trust. Faces, voices and real demonstrations feel more honest than polished copy.
  • It travels. A good video can become a Reel, a Short, an ad, a product-page clip and a sales asset.

Formats that work — and what each is for

Format Best for Typical length
Short-form (Reels, Shorts) Discovery and reach 15–60 seconds
Product demo Showing how it works 30 seconds – 2 minutes
Explainer Complex products or services 60–120 seconds
Testimonial / review Trust and objections 30–90 seconds
Long-form YouTube Education, authority, search 6–20+ minutes
Creator integration Borrowed trust and reach 30–90 seconds inside a creator's video

Win the first three seconds

Most viewers decide almost instantly whether to keep watching. Open with:

  • the result ("This is what 10 minutes of setup gets you…"),
  • a bold claim you can back up,
  • a question your audience already asks, or
  • movement and a clear subject on screen — no slow logo intros.

Design for silent, vertical viewing

  • Captions on every video — many people watch with the sound off.
  • Vertical 9:16 first for social, then cut 1:1, 4:5 and 16:9 versions.
  • Big, readable text and a clear subject in the centre of the frame.

Polished or authentic?

Both have a place. High production value suits brand films and launches; lighter, authentic content often performs better in social feeds and ads. Many brands combine a few polished pieces with a steady stream of simple, frequent videos.

A simple video workflow

  1. Plan — one idea per video, a hook and a clear call to action.
  2. Script — even short videos benefit from a tight outline (our writers can help).
  3. Shoot — good light and clean audio matter more than an expensive camera.
  4. Edit — pacing, cuts, captions, sound design and motion graphics decide whether people stay.
  5. Package — titles and thumbnails decide whether people click (see thumbnail design).
  6. Repurpose — cut long videos into Shorts and Reels.

How to measure video

  • Retention and average view duration — are people staying?
  • Click-through rate on thumbnails and titles.
  • Shares and saves — signals that content is genuinely useful.
  • Conversions from video traffic, tracked with links and codes.
