How to Choose a Web Development Company in India: A 12-Point Checklist

A practical checklist for choosing the best web development company in India — portfolio, process, ownership, pricing, SEO, support and the red flags to avoid.

Search for "best web development company in India" and you will find thousands of options and dozens of "top 10" lists. Most of them look the same from the outside. This checklist helps you find the one that is right for your project — whether you are a startup in Bengaluru, a retailer in Lucknow or a company in London outsourcing to India.

1. A portfolio with live, relevant work

Screenshots are easy to fake and easy to over-polish. Ask for live links to projects similar to yours — in industry, size or complexity. Open them on your phone. Are they fast? Easy to use? Still online?

2. Results, not just visuals

Good agencies talk about outcomes: faster load times, more enquiries, better rankings, higher conversion. Ask what changed for a client after launch. Even a rough before-and-after tells you whether the team thinks beyond design.

3. A technology choice that fits you

There is no single best stack. A good partner explains the trade-offs in plain language:

  • WordPress — huge ecosystem, easy editing, needs care for speed and security.
  • Shopify — the fastest route to a reliable online store.
  • Next.js and React — fast, flexible and SEO-friendly for marketing sites, web apps and headless commerce.
  • Custom back ends — for portals, dashboards and products with real business logic.

Be wary of anyone who recommends the same tool for every project.

4. A real discovery process

Before quoting, a serious company asks about your customers, goals, competitors, content and success metrics. If you receive a price after a two-line message, the scope — and the result — will be guesswork.

5. Clarity on who does the work

Ask who will design, build and manage your project, and whether any of it is outsourced. Meeting the actual project lead before you sign is a good sign.

6. Communication that works across time zones

You should know exactly how you will hear about progress: weekly demos, a shared board, written updates, one point of contact. For international clients, agree on an overlap window for calls and how fast messages get answered.

7. Ownership of code, design and accounts

In writing: once you pay, you own the source code, design files, domain, hosting and analytics accounts. Domains and hosting should be registered in your name, with the agency given access — not the other way round.

8. Transparent pricing and milestones

Look for a written scope, a fixed price or a clear rate, and payments tied to milestones (for example design approval, development complete, launch). Ask what is not included: content, stock images, premium plugins, hosting, ongoing support.

9. SEO and performance built in

A new website should launch with fast pages, mobile-first layouts, clean URLs, metadata, structured data, an XML sitemap and analytics. If you are redesigning, insist on a redirect plan — changing URLs without redirects can wipe out years of search rankings.

10. Testing and quality assurance

Ask how the team tests: real phones and browsers, slow network simulation, form and payment tests, accessibility checks. A staging site you can review before launch is standard.

11. Support after launch

Websites need updates, backups and small changes. Ask about maintenance plans, response times and the cost of future work before you sign, not after.

12. Reviews and references

Check Google reviews and directories such as Clutch or GoodFirms, and ask to speak with one or two past clients. A five-minute call with a real customer is worth more than any testimonial on a homepage.

Red flags to walk away from

  • Very low prices with no questions asked.
  • No contract, no milestones, no clear scope.
  • Your domain or hosting in the agency's name.
  • "Guaranteed first-page rankings".
  • A portfolio with no live links.
  • Pressure to pay everything upfront.

Ten questions to ask on the first call

  1. What similar projects have you built? Can I see them live?
  2. Which technology would you use for us, and why?
  3. Who exactly will work on my project?
  4. How do you handle feedback and revisions?
  5. What does your SEO and performance work include?
  6. Who owns the code, design and accounts?
  7. How are payments split across milestones?
  8. How do you test before launch?
  9. What happens after launch — support, fixes, updates?
  10. Can I speak to a past client?
